What are the differences between automatic CPAP machines and standard CPAP machines?

Standard CPAP machines have been the primary CPAP equipment for many users.  Within the last few years, auto CPAP machines have become the more popular device due to their ability to provide a more comfortable and natural experience.

The primary difference between the auto CPAP and the regular CPAP is the way in which pressure is provided to the user during CPAP therapy.  With a standard machine, pressure is continuous, fixed positive pressure.  Although these basic CPAP devices do ramp up initially, they are fixed at a pressure, which was determined during a sleep study.  The pressure does not deviate from its setting.  One major inconvenience with a standard machine is the ability to breath out against this continuous positive pressure especially if it is higher than average.

An auto CPAP machine is intended to sense on a breath-to-breath basis what the CPAP user actually needs pressure-wise at each moment.  With sensors built into the automatic CPAP machines, an algorithm determines if the user is moving into a sleep apnea event.  If so, the auto CPAP machine automatically adjusts to increase the pressure to the lowest pressure which will allow the user to get through the event.  Once the sleep apnea event passes, the auto-adjusting machine will ramp down to a level, which will allow a more natural breathing sensation.  More information on the REMstar Auto algorithm can be found here. As you can imagine, there is much less fighting against a positive pressure allowing for a more comfortable CPAP experience.  If you have any more questions, please contact us.
