Being diagnosed with OSA is anything but “cool” especially when the recommended treatment is a bulky CPAP machine. The new Z1 CPAP machine by Human Design Medical (HDM) helps make CPAP therapy easier by putting some “coolness” back into the machine. This CPAP is super small and totally portable.
No more worrying about packing your CPAP for travel. At only 10 ounces, the Z1 is the world’s smallest, lightest CPAP machine available today. It fits easily into an overnight bag because it is only 6.5 inches long, and with its optional FAA approved integrated battery, you’ll be assured of a good night’s rest even if the power goes out. The Z1 CPAP Machine makes camping or overnight travel easy for OSA sufferers. At about the size of a soda can, the Z1 will take up minimal space on your nightstand. All the premium features you would expect to find in larger CPAP units are available on the Z1.Features:
Optional Integrated PowerShell and Battery: Do you travel, camp, boat, or just want a failover power source for cpap? The PowerShell™ delivers a seamless platform for cordless cpap that delivers cord-free power. With hot-swap battery-modules and failover capabilities, for those times when the power goes out. The battery and Z1 CPAP are held together by the well organized PowerShell. This compact Unplugged System is the ultimate solution for cpap users who travel or on the go. The lithium ion battery is rechargeable and offers 8 hours of use from a single charge. The Z1 CPAP machine shows the amount of power remaining in the battery right on the display screen.
Z-Breathe™: More natural breathing. A top concern cpap users have is the difficulty in exhaling against the pressure exerted by the cpap machine. The Z1™ uses our proprietary Z-Breathe™ algorithm that learns from your breathing pattern and relieves machine pressure on exhalation. This comfort feature can be adjusted by you as needed.Auto Altitude Adjustment: The Z1 CPAP machine can operate from sea level up to 8,000 feet above sea level. The machine automatically adjusts as needed to accommodate changes in elevation
Sound Level: Due to the high velocity of the small motor, the Z1 could potentially have a higher pitch than other comparable machines. If noise sensitivity is an issue, we recommend calling us to discuss your option. 1-866-414-9700Leak Compensation: the Z1 automatically compensates for minor air leakagehelping ensure the proper treatment pressure is maintained.
Ramp Feature: The Z1 CPAP machine includes a ramp feature that can be set from 0 to 45 minutes. This allows the CPAP pressure to start at a lower pressure, and then gradually increase to the prescribed pressure. The Ramp can be customized by the user and even turned off if needed.
Upgradable Operating System: The Z1 firmware and software can be easily updated via the USB Cable and your computer or by using a Micro SD Card.
Heat Moisture Exchanger For Humidification: The hygenic, disposable HME works by capturing heat and moisture as you exhale and provides it back to you as you breathe. The HME does not use any electricity or complex moving parts. The HME can be used for 10 days.
Data Recording & Software: The Z1 CPAP machine records data concerning the time of use and sleep events. Using the software is free with the purchase of the machine and can be updated using the included USB cable. The software is compatible with Window based computers.

Q. Is there a humidifier available for the Z1?A.Currently HDM does not offer a humidifier, but you may use an inline HME or a platform type of Heated Humidifier such as the Fisher & Paykel HC150.
Q. Does my battery charge when the AC Adapter is plugged into the PowerShell and wall outlet?
A. Yes and when your battery has a full charge it will be displayed on the Z1 LCD screen.
Q. How long does the battery last on one charge?A.Your battery’s charge is based on your pressure setting. If your pressure is less than 14 cm H20 it can last 2 full nights on a charge.

I got the Z1 for my two week trip out West, which was a mixture of camping and hotels. I bought the car charger thinking that while we were traveling from place to place that it would be charged for later that night, I was wrong. It really needs ~8 hours to fully charge the battery and it provided ~9+ hours at a setting of 10. I also wish I knew 1) the battery pack does not recharge while you are using the CPAP during the night that is plugged into an electrical outlet like other electronic devices, and 2) unplug the battery if you aren't using it or charging it. The device is sensitive to movements and activates the screen when you are traveling, my fully charged battery ended up getting halfway down after a full day of traveling from airport to airport. Save yourself some hassle and just unplug the battery from the cradle and get an extra battery.
With all that said, I would highly recommend this CPAP. It is a little bit louder than my home CPAP but the size and the mobility definitely makes up for it. I just wish I knew some of these quirks with the battery before my trip but that's my fault for not doing more research.

Per a quick reply from the manufacturer, it turns out that I overlooked the page proved with the HME (separate from the user manual) that indicated the correct attachment is between the tube from face mask and the hose.
I appreciate the quick service reply and now more fully appreciate the value, quality, and function of the Z1.

Have used the Z1 CPAP/Powershell for two trips since purchasing it in Feb. of this year: a weekend and for three weeks of international travel. Used the battery only on 4 or 5 evenings and got at least 7 hrs. of charge at Level 14. Used on United Airlines with no hassle. Very satisfied overall.
Issue needing improvement: the HME tube's female nozzle is slightly too large to stay on the hose tube adapter, when the unit's operating. Had to use plastic tape on adapter tube to create tight, non-slip fit. I had the same issue with multiple HMEs.

Great for travel. Not as easy to use as a true bedside unit, but it works, even on a long transpacific flight.
Suggestion: Needs a way to clip it to a bedside table when traveling. I rigged one, but if there were a small area to clip a lanyard to it, it would not so easily pull off of a bedside table (it is VERY light). There are also many smaller and longer lasting lithium ion battery packs that can be used with it (such as those that will power a laptop). I have used one quite successfully. Good to have during a power outage in addition.

100% pleased with the CPAP machine itself. However, the battery fully charged lasts only4.5 - 5 hours. I guess that could be a function of my "17" setting.

Unit is very small and love the ergonomic design. I didn't feel it workd quite as well as my larger unit at home but hard to tell as being in a hotel also affects sleep...so can't be sure... I was dissapointed to find that this unit did not capture / report AHI information even when connected to the computer which was info I was then interested in to validate it was working for me. It captured more basic info like usage hours. I will say these guys stand behind their product and I found their customer service to be excellent working through concerns, so A+ there. If you're interested in trying a small machine I'd recommend trying it, but if you're interested in the data you might check further or wait or next version.

Great unit. My pressure is 8 and just used it on an overnight flight. Worked like a dream

I feel very happy with this purchase. I found that after 7 days the HME must be changed. I noticed a change in airflow after that. The data download software is available for Windows but not Mac as yet. We travel a lot in the summer, so I am looking forward to be able to continue the CPAP therapy with this unit.

I hesitated for a long time before purchasing this machine, but now that I have it I love it. I travel a lot each summer and dragging my old Remstar through the never-ending gates of big city airports was terrible. I simply can't wait to pop this thing in my purse and be ready to go. Also, I am using it every night at home and ti performs so much better than my Remstar as it is both quieter and more efficient.
The only drawback is the price which I consider to be rather steep especially when you add the battery shell. However, the area I live in has frequent power outages and I will be traveling to areas where power outlets may not be bedside so this will work in those cases as well. Something, my Remstar could never do.

The filter cover is very hard to grasp and squeeze, which one has to do before first use.
Also, I am not happy with the HME unit as I did wake up very, very dry after using it the first night. A suggestion for the engineers for humidity: some way to plug in a small bottle of water at the top?

I bought this hoping this would be better than taking my System One with Battery backup packs, inverters, et al whenever we take trips in our 25 foot RV. Two heavy bags of stuff was a bit much to even want to take along - much less set up with plugs, hooks, extension cords, etc.
I bought the Z-1 with two batteries, charged them up and took it on the road for two weeks over Christmas, and it proved to be everything I hoped for and more.
First, it all fits in a small bag! Each battery lasts all night when staying without AC power (like in Walmart or Cracker Barrel parking lots or truck stops en route to a destination). It's easy to set up and it works well. A bit noisier than my home cpap, but not so its any problem.
I can hang the Z-1 off a hook, a light, a knob, or anywhere convenient, turn it on, put on the Pilairo mask, and by the time it ramps up I'm asleep. And it doesn't take up an entire storage cabinet and more in the RV like my home cpap did.
I am very pleased with the Z-1 and consider it the perfect travel cpap. If I have to travel by plane also, this will be easy to pack and won't require my taking a large or second bag.
The z-1 is so perfect for camping and travel, I have to fight the temptation to buy a spare!

I used my Z1 for the first time this week. It was really nice to be able to store all of my CPAP stuff in my single carry-on! I did carry a small piece of line that I had tied into a loop, for the purpose of hanging the Z1 on a bedpost. Hotel bedpost very in height and you never know what that will be until you get there. This worked out great and it is infinitely adjustable.
As far as the Z1 itself… Fantastic! I have three days of use and would not know that I wasn’t using my day-to-day CPAP. It truly has made a difference in the way I travel, and I can say that after only one trip!
I am sure that I will have more to say over the next few months and I will be more than glad to share.

Purchased the Z1 CPAP machine (plugged model) in early January 2014 and immediately took on a trip. What a pleasure to finally travel with a small and lightweight CPAP machine - I no longer dread the TSA inspection at the airport. So light and small I put-it in my checked baggage. Set-up was easy, logical, and the instructions were well written. Machine worked flawlessly for the few days I have used-it. The only issue; the moisture exchange adapters that the device comes-with are not up to the humidifying level I have come accustomed to with my at home CPAP machine with a built-in conventional humidifier. Although it should be noted I was in the dry desert at the time (Palm Springs, CA). A more typical humidifier is available but then you start getting into more weight and less compact situation. Other than the aforementioned, I would highly recommend the machine.

I am not sure what I was expecting when I ordered the Z1. I have been using my s8 to travel and its getting a bit bruised up. I travel a lot and really need something to not take up much room or space. So I ordered teh z1 unplugged to give it a try. I was pleasantly surprised by the unit. For one, its super tiny. I can't believe they were able to make this thing actually work since the motor has to be really small. Also, its so lightweight that I actually forget I packed it. Overall, it's great for me although I could use a humidifier. I also was told that an auto software version should be available sometime in the next few quarters to upgrade the unit to an auto via USB cable. i will be looking forward to that since I was used to the auto.
