Why Do You Need a Sleep Apnea Prescription for a CPAP Machine?

The FDA categorizes medical devices into three classes (I, II, or III) based on their associated risks and the regulatory controls required to provide a reasonable assurance of safety and effectiveness. CPAP machines fall under Class II, requiring prescriptions from those who wish to obtain them.

There are additional reasons why one might need a sleep apnea prescription to purchase CPAP equipment:

• A board-certified sleep specialist typically sets a pressure setting after interpreting the results of a sleep study. Unless the CPAP machine is an auto adjusting machine, a proper pressure setting based on your apnea/hypopnea index (AHI) and lowest oxygen saturation (SaO2) are standard procedure. . At the CPAP shop we use your Rx to properly set up your new CPAP machine if your purchase is a fixed pressure machine. The industry is moving toward auto adjusting machines as a more natural and effective treatment. So a fixed pressure machine is not necessary.
• Patients using a CPAP machine to treat OSA run the risk of developing central sleep apnea, which can occur after therapy and needs to be treated with either a BiPAP or ASV machine.

Sleep Apnea Prescription
How Do You Get a Rx Sleep Apnea Prescription for a CPAP Machine and from Whom?

If you are new to CPAP therapy, in order to obtain an Rx for a CPAP machine, a person must undergo a sleep study. Afterwards, a board-certified sleep specialist interprets the results of the study based on your AHI and SaO2. The sleep physician can write the prescription or forward it along to another licensed medical professional, including: medical doctors, doctors of osteopathy, medical psychiatrists, physicians’ assistants, nurse practitioners, dentists, and naturopathic physicians. If you are currently on CPAP, a prescription from your primary care physician or pulmonologist will satisfy the requirement.

How Long Does the Rx Sleep Apnea Prescription Last?

CPAP prescriptions are typically given for a lifetime. However, if for some reason a prescription specifies a number of refills or an expiration date, the prescription will become invalid when the refills have run out or the expiration date has passed. At this point, you would need to have a new sleep study or a new prescription from your primary care physician.

What DON’T you need a CPAP prescription for?

You do not need a sleep apnea prescription (CPAP prescription) if you are purchasing PAP supplies which include filters, tubing, and any accessories.

Buying and Selling CPAP Equipment Online
