How Often to Change CPAP Filters

November 9, 2023 | |

You need to change your CPAP filters regularly for both your health and the healthy operation of your CPAP machine. Replacing your filters is an important part of the maintenance of your CPAP equipment.

What is a CPAP filter?

CPAP filters help keep the air you breathe through your CPAP machine clean. The filter also help maintain the long-term performance of your machine by filtering out dirt and dust that can cause damage.

Types of CPAP Filters

There are two types of CPAP filters. Each type has its own purpose and must be maintained differently.

Often CPAP machine users refer to the types as black and white. It’s true that they are black and white, but the true nature of their difference is in their purpose.

The black CPAP filter removes pollen and larger debris from the air before the air reaches the white CPAP filter. The black CPAP filter should be washed once per week and replaced once every six months.

The white filter removes the finer debris from the air before the air reaches the CPAP machine itself. The white CPAP filter is disposable and should be changed every two weeks.

The CPAP filter system is an important part of the CPAP machine. The filter system aids in improving the quality of air being delivered to the CPAP user. Poor air quality being pumped into the lungs can lead to other health problems.

We suggest you keep a calendar by your CPAP machine and mark the dates you need to clean or replace your CPAP filters. Remember, the white CPAP filters are disposable and should be replaced bi-weekly. The black CPAP filters are washable and should be washed each week and replaced every six months.

Following your CPAP filter replacement schedule can help you get the rest you need.

What Causes CPAP Filter to Turn Black?

If you never change your CPAP filter, the particles in the air will begin to accumulate on the filter, turning it black. Poor indoor air quality may also be affecting the filter, including airborne particles from cigarette smoke and candles.

How Often Do You Change Filter in CPAP Machine?

Check your user manual for your CPAP machine for specific information on filter replacement. Depending on how often the machine is used, filters generally should be replaced twice a month.
