CPAP Filters

In order to keep a CPAP machine working longer and more effectively, CPAP filters are essential. Many different types of dust, pollen, and polluted air particles are captured by the CPAP filters. If CPAP filters do not remove these tiny dust particles, then it can cause build up inside the machine, resulting in damage and inevitably shorter equipment lifespan. These particles may eventually find their way into the user's airway if not properly cleaned. There are many different kinds of CPAP filters, including reusable CPAP filters, disposable CPAP filters, bacteria-resistant CPAP filters, and more.

CPAP Replacement Filter Frequently Asked Questions

What are the different types of CPAP filters?

CPAP machine filters come in three types: bacteria filters, reusable filters, and disposable fine filters. The bacteria filters and the disposable filters should be replaced after a short time whereas the reusable filters can be reused with regular washing for a specific number of months.

What is the purpose of CPAP machine filters?

Ambient air contains particles of molds, dust, bacteria, and many other impurities. CPAP machine filters act as a protective layer to prevent these impurities from entering the CPAP machine so that you can breathe easily.

How Often Should I Replace My CPAP Filters?

The following replacement plan should be followed for CPAP filters because their lifespans vary:

  • Filters that are disposable and should be changed every four weeks, or sooner, specifically  if they start to discolor.
  • Replace reusable filters every six months or sooner, mainly if the foam starts to deteriorate.
  • Bacteria filters should be replaced every 30 days or sooner, especially if the filter starts  to discolor. They are disposable.

What Are Reusable Filters?

Reusable filters are made of foam and can be cleaned and reused. Reusable filters are not substitutes for disposable filters since some CPAP machines are designed to use a specific type of filter. Some CPAP machines are able to use both reusable and disposable filters like the DreamStation. Reusable filters should be replaced every 6 months, or sooner if the foam degrades to the point that it starts to break down.

Is it okay to use CPAP machines without filters?

It is strictly recommended that you use CPAP filters because they filter out all the harmful impurities from entering your body. Also, unclean air can damage your CPAP machine.

Can you wash a filter for CPAP?

Reusable filters are washable as they are made up of foam and should be washed after each use or at least once a week.

What are the materials used to make CPAP machine filters?

The materials used to make CPAP machine filters are foam, paper, or woven synthetic material.

What Are Disposable Filters?

Disposable CPAP replacement filters are a highly popular kind of filter and are typically constructed of fine mesh material. These filters are made to enhance the air you breathe and keep dangerous contaminants out of your body, much like the air filter in your house or vehicle. A disposable filter should be discarded and replaced when it starts to appear stained or after a specific amount of time, as the name implies.

What Are Bacteria Filters?

When air has passed through two distinct sets of filters, a bacteria filter may get rid of the tiniest irritants and microorganisms that may still be present. When the filter starts to show indications of discoloration, it may need to be replaced and thrown out with it being disposable. Although they are entirely optional in CPAP therapy, many patients employ bacteria filters to ensure that the air they are inhaling is of the greatest quality.
